Welcome to our classroom!

Class Constitution

Our class has created a classroom constitution that reminds us of the expectations we have for ourselves and each other. On the island, our living space, are the behaviors we would like to exhibit. In the ocean waters are the behaviors we would like to minimize. This constitution is a helpful and pleasant reminder of the expectations we have agreed to follow.

About Mr. Kraly

Mr. Kraly is a fifth and sixth grade teacher and has been teaching at Chatfield School since its opening in 1997. By creating a classroom of support, respect, and high expectations, Mr. Kraly strives to help students reach their full potential both academically and socially. Mr. Kraly encourages his students to become well-rounded individuals by developing their multiple intelligences, sharing his experiences, and also inviting students to share their knowledge and expertise. Mr. Kraly holds a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Western Michigan University and a master's degree in Educational Leadership from Oakland University. Mr. Kraly is a member of Lapeer Community Church and sings with the Carolyn Mawby Chorale of Flint.

Ice Harvest

We enjoyed the opportunity to get out on the pond ice in February. Here is part of our class sawing and harvesting ice. In Science and Math we are working to understand volume. We looked at the difference between water displacement and using length measurements to find volume.

As we worked we remembered that Jim Davis from the Davis Brothers Historical Farm tells of how ice was harvested during the winter months in Lapeer and kept frozen until the late Summer during the early 1900s.

You will see that Peter, our ecology instructor, also helped us to create an impressive ice tower.

The ice saw is suprisingly easier to use than it appears.
