Ice Harvesting

Ice Harvesting has Science, Social Studies and Math applications.  Here the Upper El. students harvest ice by hand as was done in the Lapeer area less than 100 years ago.  Students apply measurement skills to determine volume using a formula versus the water displacement.

On several inches of ice, a class is able to participate in the ice harvest.

Ice is cut with an ice saw using a gentle up and down motion.Ice "tongs" are used to pull the cut ice out of the water.

Ice is stacked in a formation.

Measurements are taken of a block of ice. The volume will then be compared to the water displacement.
