Fifth and Sixth Graders Checking Nest Boxes
Students are attempting to restore the native bird species that includes the bluebird, chickadee, tree swallow, and house wren by removing the invasive species : house sparrow. Each week students check boxes on the Prairie and Ponds and remove the invasive species if found. They also restore, maintain nestboxes, record data to ensure proper nestbox placement, and simply enjoy the nature that surrounds our beautiful school. Students record data on the Nest Watch database and are in the process of creating blogs and brochures to inform the community of our efforts. Students have also taken part in building nestboxes and will be building winter boxes as well.
